Ph.D Part-Time


This program has been designed to cater to the scholarly needs of candidates who are in a full-time employment. The program is intended to prepare participants for research and teaching positions both within and outside academia. Our doctoral scholars are expected to be specialists in their respective fields and capable of generating new knowledge and be the great new thinkers for our world.


The scholars are expected to develop deep understanding in the areas of research selected by them. They also get a structured exposure to a range of topics, develop various professional skills, and participate in academic and other activities.


Candidates need to satisfy the following criteria to be eligible for admission to the Doctoral Program. For information on the schools please visit the Xavier University, Bhubaneswar homepage .Candidates not meeting the eligibility criteria need not apply to the school in concern. 

  • Pre-qualifications listed in the following table to be satisfied
  • A full-time job employment currently
  • At least three years of full-time work experience after obtaining the qualifying degree in executive/ managerial/ teaching/ research field(s) from an organization of repute as on March 31, 2020.
  • Initial two years stay in the campus is mandatory, for which candidates need to avail leave for such period from their regular employer. From third year onwards, it is required to be in the campus for at least 20 days in each year (till completion of thesis) to engage with the guide and appear for the mandatory examinations/seminars.
School Necessary Qualification for Doctoral Studies: Candidates should have

Master’s or equivalent degree in any discipline with minimum 60% of marks in the Master’s level.

In all these cases, the applicants also need to secure at least 55% marks in aggregate in the Master’s (or an equivalent) level. In case this score is available on a letter-grade system or grade-point system, the University expects a minimum equivalent of 55% marks in aggregate as per the awarding University’s norms for conversion to a percentage.

Candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of their academic records and SOPs. The shortlisted candidates will be required to appear for Xavier Research Aptitude Test (X-RAT), Subject Test (if applicable), Presentation, and Personal Interview to be held in Bhubaneswar. Details about X-RAT is available separately on our website. The coursework for the selected candidates will commence from June 2020.


Xavier Research Aptitude Test (X-RAT) is a test of some basic skills considered essential for researchers, namely writing ability, verbal ability and comprehension, reasoning, and quantitative aptitude.

Schools shall be conducting a subject test (for domain candidates only) which the shortlisted candidates may need to appear. Details on the test will be communicated to applicants separately.


The candidates who will be offered admission into the doctoral program will be classified in two categories:


  • Category I (Domain Candidates): These candidates have the requisite domain-level qualification as given in the table below (received within the last 5 years) at the time of admission.
  • Category II (Other Candidates): These candidates are applicants who do not meet the requirements of Domain Candidates as documented below.

The Ph.D. students are expected to complete the program in 4 years after doctoral registration (please refer to the table below). It may be extended with due approvals.


  • Category I (Domain Candidates): The first year will be spent on doctoral coursework, and the remaining years for completing subsequent steps leading to the doctoral thesis.
  • Category II (Other Candidates):In the first year, the students will be required to attend the domain-related master level courses that are prescribed by the School Research Committee. The doctoral coursework will commence from 2nd year onwards.

Doctoral Coursework

The coursework is organized in three phases (Phase-I, Phase-II, Phase-III). The coursework will broadly involve the following courses as given in the table below. Additionally, workshops will be organized as per requirements.

Thesis Phase

The Thesis phase starts after the doctoral registration. The scholar is conferred the title as given below on successful completion of all the requirements of the thesis.

Comprehensive Qualifying Examination: 

The Comprehensive qualifying examination will be conducted after the successful completion of course work. After successful completion of the comprehensive examination, the student will be registered into the doctoral program (doctoral registration).
